Lorraine & Rashawn: Raleigh, NC

Lorraine & Rashawn are college sweethearts who met at their homecoming party

How did you meet? Tell us about the proposal.

We met in 2009 at a college homecoming event. The proposal was special and incorporated 2 special people who are no longer with us (Lorraine’s dad and Rashawn’s grandmother). Lorraine’s friends took her to a butterfly exhibit in Washington DC. Butterflies remind her that her dad is here with her. When she left the exhibit Rashawn comes out with his grandmother’s favorite flower and gets down on one knee and proposes!

Let’s talk fashion. How did you both choose your wedding day look? Describe the looks in detail.

Lorraine chose a dress that had nice lace detail that resembled her mother’s veil. The veil had beautiful appliques and the dress had similar detail. The dress was strapless with a sweetheart neckline that accentuate Lorraine’s figure. The shoes were a shine gold to add extra flare to the look. Rashawn wore a navy blue suit that fit his personality. He selected brown shoes to give a relax vibe. The tie was a shiny gold to highlight the gold in the bridesmaids dresses.

Tell us about your wedding! What was the inspiration behind your day? Did you have a specific theme, style or color palette? Did you incorporate any cultural or religious traditions in any part of your day?

The inspiration behind our special day was aspects that were us! The color palette was blue and gold which were our color school colors. The theme was travel which we love travelling. Another inspiration for the cocktail hour was music and games. We had a live band comprised of friends and games on the patio. We also wanted to make sure 2 special people (Lorraine’s dad and Rashawn’s grandmother) that could not be there were represented.

What was the most anticipated or special moment of your wedding day?

With the décor, I trusted my designer so much that I told him what I wanted and what I liked and he executed it with little direction. When I was able to see the ceremony space, cocktail hour, and reception it was the first time and I loved every minute of it. All the detail and the theme through out each part.

Let’s talk wedding decor. How did you decorate your space for the ceremony and the reception? Was any part of the decor DIY?

We had a spacious venue and wanted every area to have a little something. To go along with the theme suitcases and globes were used. We even incorporated photos of us on various trips we have taken. A couple of DIY areas were the luggage tag seating cards, games for cocktail hour, and some of the suitcases were from family members to make it special.

Did you personalize the day in any way (food trucks, guest entertainment etc.)? What were some of your favorite parts of your wedding?

My favorite part of the wedding was all the special people in my life being apart of the wedding. Those that came to the wedding knew it was our wedding. The special touches were in every corner from the time you entered the building. The games were a great way to join our friends and have fun!

What were the florals like in your wedding? Did you use flowers in any of your design elements like the bridal bouquets, centerpieces or ceremony backdrop? Did they play an important part in the overall style of your wedding?

The flowers were subtle and a lot of greenery was used. Flowers were used in the bouquets and centerpieces. They were also used in the décor. The flowers added that romantic touch.
