Southern Noir Weddings Collective Member, Cake Couture,  Mariston and Brie Marrow recently took a much needed vacation to New Orleans, Louisiana. While there, they connected with photographer Rico Pleasant of Rico Images for a photography session around the city.

Why did you choose to vacation in NOLA?

We had a wedding cancellation for that weekend so we decided to take an impromptu trip to New Orleans. We have always loved the people, culture & food there so we figured, why not just go. Also while we were there, we did the “Murder Tour“. This is where you go to the infamous murder scene’s that happened in New Orleans dating back to the early 1900’s.

Where did you stay while you were there?

We stayed at the Cambia Hotel in the warehouse district of downtown New Orleans. It was a very artsy colorful hotel with lost of artistic NOLA themed designed.


How did you get started in the wedding industry:

I started out making cake pops for my kids and from there I started doing cakes for friends and family. After a while, I got a call from a fellow football mom who needed a baby shower cake and the rest is history.

What makes your desserts so special:

We make everything from scratch and we bake fresh everyday so you are always getting fresh cake. In addition, we take pride in our cake designs which for some bakers can be hard to master both.


What do you enjoy the most about the baking process?

I really enjoy the design process with our wedding cakes and I love baking desserts. Cheesecakes, cobblers, pies, these are the things I love baking.

How would you describe your cake style?

Modern contemporary wedding cake designs. I can do the traditional buttercream too but, my style and love is to create ART with my cakes.

Whats your favorite cake flavor you bake?

Toasted Coconut. Its a simple butter vanilla cake topped with a toasted coconut topping.

You have added catering to your business recently. How did that come about?

I’ve always been a foodie. I love food so much that I went to culinary school to further my expertise. Getting into the industry through baking, cooking was bound to happen. I had a wedding cake client who asked for a catering referral and I recommended myself! I just needed a foot in the door to add it to my business. We did a consultation, she booked us and since then we have been added to a few venue’s preferred caterers list.

How would you describe your cuisine?

Soulful and very southern with a modern flare and approach.

What is it like being a husband and wife team?

Amazing! We have such an amazing partnership. Its an amazing experience to birth something with the one you love and watch it grow. That has been Cake Couture. We have our moments, every now and then but thats natural. Communication is always the key.`

How do you maintain your marriage & business partnership?

We separate home and business. We don’t bring our business home.

 

What’s next for Cake Couture?

Recently we traveled to LA and was featured on the Netflix show, Sugar Rush so stay tuned for season 2. We didn’t win but we had an amazing experience.

In the future, we would love to open our own restaurant so we look forward to working on that soon.
